Why bother with breakfast?

Discover why breakfast is important for everyone – whatever your age or lifestyle.

Are you a keen breakfaster or a breakfast skipper? The truth is breakfast should be a life-long habit.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day and ‘breaks the fast’- the time between the last meal or snack you ate before you went to bed and the first thing you eat the next day. Everybody needs the boost of energy that breakfast provides so eat within two hours of getting up. Research has shown that people who skip breakfast do not perform as well either physically or mentally as those who don’t.

Modern breakfast cereal was first produced at the end of the 19th century and is now the most popular choice of breakfast in the UK*. Ready-to-eat cereals can offer healthy choices and variety. As well as being tasty, they are quick and easy to prepare and eat.

Today, a healthy diet is all about balance; eating more of some foods and less of others and eating certain foods more often than others. Eating wholegrain breakfast cereal daily that is low in fat, high in fibre, low in sugar, low in salt and fortified with certain vitamins and minerals is a big step towards this.

Why ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are an ideal choice

  • Source of/High in fibre: All cereals contain fibre. For health choose those high in fibre.
  • Low in fat: Many breakfast cereals are low in fat but not all. It’s always worth checking the nutritional information on pack to be sure (low fat is <3.0g/100g).
  • Many Fortified with vitamins and minerals (micronutrients): Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts to control body processes and stay healthy.
  • Provide energy: Breakfast should provide about 20% of your daily nutrient intake. Breakfast provides an energy boost and helps to keep you going until our next snack or meal.
  • Eaten with milk: Milk is an excellent source of calcium which we need for healthy bones and teeth. Milk also contains other vitamins and minerals.
